This Body

The body is a home, and each one is extraordinary. There is such beauty in the fact that we all exist differently, no scar or birthmark is replicated between us. I see this beauty everywhere, at all times, except within myself. When I turn towards the mirror, what I see has been warped by the words of those who do not deem my body to be worthy, to be beautiful.
In This Body I utilize photography and poetry to explore the deeply rooted negative perception I have of my own body and move towards altering that perception until I see something beautiful. The work takes many things that have created this perception of myself into consideration, such as biases within American society and the Black community surrounding Black femininity, as well as the curated perception of the Black female body that has been shaped by Eurocentric beauty standards and upheld by the media for decades.
